Who We Are
Family Outreach Corpus Christi, Inc. is a non profit 501(c)(3) organization that exists to develop healthy relationships by providing free education, support, and counseling in a safe environment. We also assist families in evaluating and finding other community resources needed to provide for the physical and emotional needs of themselves and their families. Our ultimate goal is to prevent child abuse and neglect by strengthening the family unit and improving the lives of children one family at a time!
Our History
The Family Outreach office in Corpus Christi opened on March 7, 1977 as a joint venture between Child Protective Services (CPS) and the Corpus Christi chapter of the National Council of Jewish Women (NCJW). The purpose of the organization was to prevent child abuse by serving parents who were voluntarily seeking help with child-related issues. The goal was to strengthen these families and to keep them from entering the CPS system. Within two years, Family Outreach became an independent, 501 (c) (3) non-profit agency and NCJW was no longer officially involved.
Soon thereafter, Family Outreach Corpus Christi, Inc. (FOCC) became a charter member of Family Outreach of America (FOA) which formed in the early 1980s for the purpose of creating standards of operation for Family Outreach centers- which had developed nationwide- and fundraising to help support budgets. At the time, there were 32 Family Outreach centers in Texas; however, only a few were able to continue providing services when state cuts resulted in funding losses.
The FOCC Board remained faithful to its commitment to do what was necessary to keep the organization and its mission alive. Although the journey has been tough, FOCC continues to be a strong organization and a vital part of the community today. Family Outreach has expanded to provide counseling, play therapy, support groups and psycho-educational classes free to the families of Nueces County and surrounding areas.
